Travels in Lanzarote: Day 2. Red and Green Hills

On the second day of our Lanzarote trip, I spent an hour or so sitting on the hillside near to where we were renting our little house, on the outskirts of the village of Haria. We chose to stay in the north of the island, where the landscape is slightly greener. There are very few trees on the island, but our valley had lots of palm trees.

The thing that really struck me though, about the area around Haria, was the Australian-style red soil. It was weathered into a series of gullies, which were a nightmare to actually paint, but which contrasted strikingly with the laterally terraced hill.

Unfortunately, it was an unseasonably cold day and it was especially windy on the hill. Despite wearing lots of layers, it wasn't comfortable, so I only got to do the one painting before heading off for somewhere warmer. I was pleased to have got one sketch done though.

More tomorrow!
